  • Upgrade DSP100

Dear Members, I have the iso file on cd and the KDM on a USB stick, from Dolby, to upgrade the DSP100 to the latest software v.4.7..8 (7). I tried inserting the CD & USB, nothing happens. All help and assistance greatly appreciated. Dolby sent me an instruction sheet. I have no clue where to start. Not computer savvy. Thanks.

You must inset the CD and plug the USB, on the DSS100, and restart the DSS100 and DSP100 for boot from the CD.

If you are not computer savy, maybe you want to leave that to a qualified engineer. If it's just for fun, go for it. But if that old DSP100 is supposed to show something to an audience, there are many things that can go wrong when you update. Just be aware that that's not Windows (probably the wrong comparison here!) which is designed to update on a regular basis etc.

Those old systems often have failed (dirty?) CDROM drives. They can still be updated but that needs a "computer savy" person I'm afraid!

Finally, what version are you coming from?

      Good luck!

That is super important, because the server/media block might be left in an older version on purpose.

indeed, that's why I asked the question ? "newer" is not necessarily "better".

It would also help to know what projector is connected to that DSP100.

My memory on this is now very hazy, as it's the best part of a decade since I've had to do it; but isn't it the case that if you're updating from a pre-DCI version (e.g. 4.3, which a lot of DSS servers seem to have shipped with) to a DCI version, the media block won't talk to the decrypter in a Series 1 projector unless the projector's TI firmware has been updated to a certain version or later? If that's right and the OP's DSP100 is hooked to a Series 1 projector, then updating the DSP100 to the final version (4.7.8.7) could break the overall system.

memory is a bit hazy too but I remember >=4.4 breaks the Cinelink I support. IF the Gore Board in the Series I projector supports it, happy days. If not, the server won't talk to the projector anymore.

Cinelink II can be tested BEFORE upgrading, there is a script on 4.3. If it doesn't work, it could be that the certificates need to be recovered in the Gore board, and there is a procedure for that. If that doesn't work either, then versions over 4.3 are not possible.

Mind you, one CANNOT DOWNGRADE from 4.4 to 4.3.

As I said before, might be better to leave it to a computer savy person - unless this is for fun, on a "home" system! (which can still be bricked)

As a side note, I remember the "kdm on the USB stick" to be a flakey process. I'd always upload the KDM via FTP *AND* check with the script that the upgrade was licensed BEFORE updating. Not the end of the world if the KDM didn't work but that meant connecting to the media block via USB or - potentially - realise only afterwards that the KDM is corrupted/invalid/etc.

Also, updating via CD is also very flakey. If the drive fails to read, the install can stop in weird ways so I've always updated via FTP.

The restrictions on upgrading/downgrading is just for the CAT862 used in the DSS200. The DSS100/DSP100 can go up and back. The servers couldn't care less about the Gore Board (or glue cable). I have theatres, right now, running without those. Only if you had a VPF deal did you have to get the Gore Board. With the DLP program, it shows up as a "Security Enclosure." However, the server doesn't care.

I'm pretty sure I don't have any DSS100/DSP100 systems still in operation. For a while, a couple of sites had them as ready-spares but even that fell by the wayside.

I seem to recall that the DSS100 was fussy about the CD-ROM drive and one couldn't just plunk any off-the-shelf drive in. The DSS200 was much more accommodating. Normally, one just puts in the CD...presuming it is formatted properly (burn from an ISO image) it boots off of that. You can also remote-update using the appropriate file and an SSH program like PuTTY. Besure to have the KDM for the DSP100 loaded in before doing the update or you will have a version mismatch.

About the only time I use the disc tray was for "installation" discs.

I kissed goodbye to my last DSS100/DSP100 in August 2020, but that was feeding a Series 2 projector via Enigma. This was at a drive in. The DSS combo had been getting temperamental: scheduled shows would not start occasionally and at random, and every now and again the color space would suddenly go all weird. All the SMART parameters for the drives were OK, we tried new HD-SDI cables, contact cleaned and reseated up the wazoo, did a clean install of the software bundle, reflashed the Enigma firmware, etc. etc., and lived with its foibles. Then came covid, and suddenly that drive-in was selling out every spot, and a higher level of reliability was needed. One lost show later, the manager lost patience with the geriatric Dolby care home patient, and told us to replace it with an IMS3000 ASAP, which we did.

The last Series 1 projector I serviced regularly was retired a few months before that. I haven't even been asked to do any one-time service calls on Series 1 stuff since around 2022.

It was the Cinelink I/II upgrade one way ticket, plus the Gore board certificate recovery stuff I was forgetting about - thanks Marco. For my first couple of years at MiT, I had to negotiate that minefield regularly; but it's now been so long that I've forgotten it all.

I loved the DSS series mostly because they were giving me so much work! The database was so fragile!

Thanks Steve, it was the DSS200/862 which was a one-way-only update!

A big thank you to all the wonderful Film-Tech members contributions. I will play it safe, do the basic steps advised by Jose Angel today and will post the outcome. Cheers.

Marco, the DSS/DSP100 is connected to Christie CP2000SB.

I still have a sizable DSS200 "fleet" to tend to. They are dropping but most are still kicking. For series 1, I still have a CP2000SB that I swear will outlive us all and a few DP2000s but one of those has been threatening with giving up yet it continues to operate daily.

If anyone is looking for Barco HDSDI boards, without enigmas, I have some (new in box even).

Steve, My CP2000SB keeps showing 'component door open' all the time. All doors are close. Does not affect the show. Any thoughts on this? Thanks

Sorry no. I would check the switches on all of the doors too. Any chance there is more information on the error (a code number or something)?
