  • Can a DCP file name folder be changed?

I have a DCP I have created that has a mistake in the title. If I rename the folder to the correct information, will that render it unplayable?

No, Its just a folder name. All the files IN the folder. You cannot touch them typically.
In terms of changing the name as will appear on the DCI-Player or TMS. That is found in the XML files.
If the DCP is digitally signed, you cannot touch it. (You can have an unencrypted but digitally signed DCP)
But if it's a very basic DCP, you can change the ContentTitleText/AnnotationTexts in the CPL.xml file, and it should just take. (I think)
Not something I have played with for 10 years.

But, in general, I would typically just repackage the DCP (Not render) again. Baically takes about the same time as to copy the DCP from one disk to another.

CineAsset, for example, you can ingest the DCP, then edit the metadata then export it again. That's pretty safe.

Like James indicated, most systems out there will not use the directory name for the listed name in their respective content library, if you want that to change, you need to edit the CPL*.xml file, in order to change the metadata.

Keep in mind that ingesting the same DCP twice with only a different name in the metadata will lead to potential issues.

DCP-o-Matic installs come with a whole whack of other utilities, most of which I never need. But one of them is "DCP-o-Matic 2 Editor", which appears to be exactly for this situation.

Assuming non-signed non-encrypted. It's that easy, edit, then save. But note the folder itself won't change via the edit, but you are welcome to rename it, the folder itself does not carry the title meta data, just a convenience for users.

I can confirm that this sort of thing would cause problems in our old Sony XCT-S10
servers. The CPL would show up as being on the server, but when you went to try
and play it, you'd either get some sort cryptic error code on the UI, or the server
would just 'do nothing' and totally ignore the [PLAY] command. It usually took a
complete shutdown/reboot to fix the problem. After that it worked normally.

Each CPL has its own UUID. That, by definition, is meant to be universally unique. If two different CPLs or other assets share the same, the result will be in the best case to go with the one CPL (/DCP version) or asset that was registered first, or it will "short circuit" short of speak.
I remember a DCP, some years ago, that was authored by a Clipster machine, none the less (I write that because I was jealous). It had two different subtitle versions (CPLs) where the subtitles had the same UUIDs.
While one cinema would ingest first the EN-JA version and -even after the EN-QSA version would have been ingested- Japanese subtitles would play on both CPLs, on the other -where EN-QSA was installed first- whatever you choose, you would get the Spanish version of subtitles. (Subtitles' languages are random here, in fact, the subtitles were English and Icelandic.)
There were no Sonys involved there, I am not sure how that would have worked.

Anecdote aside, since Mike says that those are DCPs he made for his own use, it makes sense to use DCP-o-matic Editor and edit the name(s) he wants.
He will loose the signing of the CPLs, but that is not critical, since the DCPs are not encrypted.

But yes, story here is. If you change any metadata in a CPL, you MUST change the UUID as well as otherwise you can really confuse the DCI-equipment.
