Good point! Those Tesla batteries cost $12,000 to $22,000. They don't last forever; "Considering EV batteries last 10 to 20 years, you hopefully won't need to replace the battery." I would not be inclined to swap out my EV battery instead of charging it.

How much could you sell a 10 year old EV with a bad battery for?

My brother had an electric car at one point. I'm not sure what brand. GM maybe?

He told me that the battery got to where there wasn't much range left in it and when he asked about the price to replace the battery they told him it exceeded the value of the car.

So he ended up throwing out an otherwise still-ok car because of the cost of changing the battery.

Which sort of takes the "green" out of having one....

Yeah the days of tinkering an old car back to life are going to end, sadly. There again, is another argument in favor of a standard-sized battery. If they could do that, and have all cars take one of a small range of battery sizes (the way it is now with gas car batteries, basically), economies of scale would kick in and you COULD keep an old EV running indefinitely. Of course that would destroy their business model. It would definitely be greener though. But as we all know....money is more important than greenery.
