eheh touche', Steve - and thanks again for your input!

Of course you're right. Let me say that in a more professional situation I would have asked for the version - maybe asked to confirm a specific version myself - and asked for logs to check things myself (which I did but never received).

Let me just add that when someone is offering free support on a public forum, maybe it's not unreasonable to expect a little extra effort from whoever is receiving that free support!

The method with 2 XD-20s available and backups + syncing that Jerry used to update is logical.

But just as an aside, if I only had one available and needed to update (as I did in the past with my XD10 and XD20), I would recommend doing a full install to a new HDD or SSD, pull the “mostly” working old ones and set aside as backups or just to preserve the soundtrack contents or configurations.

The XD-20 in my experience is better about preserving licenses during installs or updates, but past knowledge is that the XD-10s wipe licenses, and that backup/restore is necessary to get licenses back (as Jerry smartly did anyway).

Swapping to a non DTS but identical motherboard on an XD20 does cause licenses to disappear, I still need to test if restoring a backup would bring them back over.

EDIT: as for alternate drives, I think we determined 2TB to be the XD10 limit, unsure if that changed with XD20... but doubtful as it is the same installer. It is possible to pull and preserve the CF boot device in the XD20s too, and install to an alternate CF reader and card configuration. /boot at minimum lives on the CF module.

Ryan, regarding your comments about saving licenses during a software update on the XD-20. Before doing an update or a fresh install you can save the settings as well as licenses on a USB-drive.
There are two steps which you need to complete. I believe one is called: "Settings" and the other "Master settings" which includes licenses for CSS etc.

It has been a while since I upgraded an XD-10 so I do not remember if you can do the same type of back-up to a USB there?

          Yes, exactly the same.

That was my understanding for the XD-20 before I did mine, but in the XD-20 manual it specifically says licenses cannot be transferred between machines with that method. Though it may work on original hardware.

XD-20 stores record of the licenses somewhere in NVRAM as well it seems, cause on mine, with fresh drives and a reinstall, it booted right up with the same licenses active (before restoring master/settings), confirmed it gets them from somewhere in the boot logs.

But for sure, best practice would be to still have those usb settings backed up and available!

When I tried an alternate motherboard (trying to revive a suspect video features card), it did not find it’s licenses. But I have not tried loading master settings once in that state.
