Yeah, me too. The only screening announced so far has already sold out.

Going from a couple special engagements at a classics festival to 3 actual release venues is quite a thing for VV format.

First new VV prints struck since it’s historical brief experiments in public exhibition?

And people said film was dead. Hah.

On a technical note, I wonder if they have managed to make DTS work in the format... or is the audio going to be sync'd electromechanically like the TCM festival screenings were? Or maybe just Optical SR track and some special projector film path? Supposedly TCM screenings had a "backup" audio plan, I never did hear what that implementation was.

For the best quality sound, and the most reliable way, is to use 6 track mag dubbers that interlock to the projectors like Cinerama used to do. All it requires is that you hook a shaft encoder to the shutter shaft of the projector, and the film and sound stay in sync. I've never been a big digital fan, because they can only fit so much data on the film, which means data compression, or on a CD. Granted, you can use other data storage devices these days, but DTS, which had some data compression, doesn't build new players any more. Some company would have to design, build and market a new player.

Yes, because there are people making dubbers and mag heads all of the time. The resurgence of 70mm has DTS readers and players out there still. For 1-off shows, dubbers are fine and people will do proper checks to ensure that things are synced up before the start. For a proper run, something like DTS is going to be more reliable and flexible as well as likely already has an install base. To print the DTS time code on a VV print would mean elongating the time code by 100% so, at projection speed, the reader is non-the-wiser and neither would the player.

Yeah we have been through the approaches in the other VV thread, including the possibility of syncing an ATMOS mix, was most just wondering what if anything special was done for this new release/print.

Based on the sheer number of DTS players I have had to re-cap, and or repair since it appeared, I'll take the 6 track mag any day... JRF Magnetics is still in business, and they used to make film heads, and very likely could again as they make 2" 24 track heads.

Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar in Austin can be added to the list of 5/70 locales.

They're making the claim that "[f]or this release, the DTS audio will use a discrete subwoofer channel for a more dramatic effect". I wonder how this affects the 5/70 prints.

DTS-6SV (Special Venue 6 discrete decoders), XD10 and XD20 can play discrete tracks. So, if they want to issue the equivalent of an SV disc, they certainly could. Standard practice when the disc isn't 5.1 is to list the track order on the label of the disc (and with thumb drives, they should indicate the track order). There is nothing to stop them from having a discrete 6-track version, this way. Again, so long as they issue a standard 5.1 version, everyone is "safe."

I'm personally looking forward to seeing a 15/70 print at Cineplex Vaughan whenever they plan on posting their showtimes for their second weekend. Their SR projector still puts a halfway decent image on that mid-size screen.

Should be interesting to see how the brain handles 3 hours of full 1.44:1 imagery, especially since the movie wasn't 100% made with IMAX sightlines in mind. Or maybe it was. We'll find out soon enough.

I was hoping to catch the Vistavision print in NYC, but my timeline lands me in NYC on the 3rd weekend. Shame.

That answers that question! Cheers. Modern 8p35 VV with digital audio on the print! We are in new territory folks.

I guess the follow up technical question is the partnership creating "permanent" VV venues of these 3 theatres for future releases too... or is this more a travelling special event 8p35 projection rig.

It also sounds like from their description the DTS track area is not the same as on standard 35mm. I wonder if these are also modified readers for track alignment. Since Film-Tech was listed in the partnership I'm sure Brad will be able say more once he is allowed to say more. ;-)

Pretty sure Warners handled the VistaVision installs themselves. Probably why details haven’t been as forthcoming. Wonder if they’re also providing their projectionists.

my gt laser imax is expecting a 1.43 drive. Like Chris said, will be a good test for how a feature presented this way for its full runtime will feel, especially considering the next Nolan release is expected to be fully 1.43.
