I have been looking into a multiplexer but I am confused as to which product is correct to use. Is there any particular models you would suggest. I am keen to dive into the whole arena of sound/room calibration and starting with the 650 software seems a sensible foundation to move forward with.

I'd start with the 650 as you say and move from there.
It really depends on what you're thinking of doing. If you only need to do one or two rooms, you can do some manual spatial averaging by averaging multiple readings. A bit more time consuming but a proper multiplexer might be expensive.
I definitely recommend a software solution, you can then buy a USB measurement microphone and you end up with a very lightweight, professional measurement tool.
For now, get the ECM8000 and play with itThat also how I started!

I wonder if the mic level is just so low that he was not seeing activity before taking a calibration step (change). Perhaps related to phantom power of course. I could see thinking it is not working during that step if you see no motion on the level indicator in software.
Now if he turned it way up in calibration and still had nothing that either suggests no phantom power, or an issue in the 650 setup routine.
