Does anyone have the specifications on the DTS reader LED? I have a hard time believing that it is too fancy (just a PITA to remove). It is a T1 package and the sample I have is clear body (but red light). It measures about 4.5-4.6mm from base to top of dome...so that narrows my possibilities down. I'm wondering if this one has been "figured out" to a known usable LED yet.

I replaced an LED on a Rev C DTS reader about 6 or 7 years ago.
I don't have the part number but I remember it was a "Super Bright" 3mm red LED. It had a rounded top and a small focus angle, 18 degrees or so.
It worked great. The only thing I remember about the swap was that I had to sand the outside (Not the front, just around the outside) of the LED to get it to fit back into the hole.
Hope that helps.

The LEDs that I've found, thus far, that meet the physical requirements are a wider angle (34 degrees). They are so cheap (like less than $1 for all three of the ones I've found, combined) that I'll probably get them all and just quick mount the brightest one and see if it does the job.
Boy they must hate the idea of people changing that LED because they sure didn't plan on it being changed easily. That said...a bit of work with an exacto knife and some needle nose pliers was able to free the RTV, LED and the wires.

Nah. Back in the day, we used to maintain an RX unit and would cycle it through. DTS had a flat rate for LED change. Now, the last generation of readers had some form of auto gain setting as they removed the test points and pot. The one I'm working on is a circa 2003 unit and has the test points and pot and didn't make level on the last check so the spare was put on line. I suspect that this reader isn't that sophisticated on its LED/cell system. So long as the lumen output of the LED is in the range of the pot. I guess I'll find out soon enough (and before a lay in the RTV to entomb it again.
