    The NC-17 rating was a totally worthless exercise because it wound up being no different in rule than the X.
    Well, there was one BIG rule difference. THE MPAA put the X rating in public domain, so you could self-certify as X (as did Midnight Cowboy the first year of the ratings). The MPAA didn't have the foresight to see some people would adapt it as a selling point. NC-17 was another feeble attempt to label something as "Adult Themed" in a good way.
