  • Pandemic challenge: Making movies with masks

I was just looking at a release list and watching some trailers on youtube and came across "Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn".

This is the first time I've seen anyone make a movie where all of the characters are wearing masks.

That sure must add an additional level of challenge when you're trying to make a movie.

People have (nearly) killed themselves while doing impossible stunts. Some director managed to film almost an entire movie in underwater sets. People have filmed epic battles with hundreds of actors and thousands of extras. Everything that man has ever created must have been blown-up at least once on film. But filming a movie where everybody wears a mask must have been an extraordinary challenge.

      Ummm.... yes?

Look at all of the people (including me) who complained about unintelligible dialogue in Tenet when everyone was wearing oxygen masks in so many scenes.

Now they've made at least one movie (this Loony Porn thing) were everyone in the trailer (and I assume the movie itself) is wearing a cloth mask.

In terms of what's on the screen, you lose clarity of dialogue, you lose facial expression, you lose a lot of stuff that was never a problem previously.

Behind the scenes, everything becomes a lot more difficult for the low-budget filmmaker who doesn't have hundreds-of-thousands-to-millions to spend on protective equipment and crew isolation and so forth.

The pandemic adds many and various challenges that weren't there before.

Is this a movie about a time where the characters all wore masks ? Or, is this a movie where the characters wouldn't normally wear masks but the actors wore masks while playing the characters?

If the former, I agree with it but, if the latter, I think it stupid.

Sure, but I'm pretty sure this wasn't the first movie filmed during the pandemic, even though it may be the first featuring an all-masked cast.
