  • New Sony Alamo Drafthouse Mountain View CA Opening Soon

Two new remodled former ICON Theatres are about to open in the next few weeks the first in Mountain View CA and later this Summer one in Santa Clara CA. The large ex ICON cinemas were not that old when they closed because of Covid. ' Sony Alamo Drafthouse' has taken over the lease and has been getting the place ready the last few months.

With all the money for the remodel job (new seats with tables, rugs, new Laser DCP projectors ect they have skimped on the latest movie gimmicks like many of their competition at AMC - Regal Cinemark/Century Theatres have in the SF Bay Area. No ScreenX 4DX IMAX or Dolby Cinema installed. They did keep 3 of the large former giant screen auditoriums Film-Tech Forums Film-Tech Cinema Systems Digital Cinema Forum and have put in big curved screens also they have kept the 'Dolby Atmos' installs in those three 'Big Screen' spaces. They need to come up with a new name for the giant screens-- ALAMO VISION---MEGAVIEW X---SONY SCOPE--DRAFTHOUSE GIANT EXPERIENCE SCREEN. They have missed out in collecting all the extra fees for the gimmicks they failed to put in. It will cost them way more to install at a later date. I am sure they will still make a ton of money selling the high priced food consessions and drinks. Sony/Alamo will have a big overhead staff to move all the food and bar drinks around in these large cinemas.

No screen masking that moves, 35mm/70mm film projectors or stage curtains like a few of the other Sony Alamo Cinemas have around the USA. I wonder If they will even have 3D?

I think Sony/Alamo Theatres are more interested in the food and booze sales in these fixed up cinemas then putting in new special effects that some other cinemas have put in lately.

Best of luck to them on the grand opening the second week in June 2025. Mountain View and the Santa Clara CA areas are very high end $$$ and the movie public I think will spend their entertainment dollars at these two new movie cinemas .

They will enjoy the 30 minute pre show that 'Alamo' does when the other theatres around the area just show boring ads with ceiling lights leaking on the screen. Alamo's policy of no talking ,cell phones or late arrivals will be something new for this part of the SF Bay Area . The Sony Alamo 'New Mission Theatre ' in San Francisco does very well. It may take a few times people learn the new 'Alamo' movie rules in Mountain View.
