  • Sinners in IMAX 70MM

Hopefully I'm in the correct forum for this

When I found out Sinners was shot in Ultra Panavision, I had to ask…WHY?? Most screens in cinemas are presenting films on common width screens and I assume directors know this. I just couldn’t understand Ryan Coogler’s choice, especially with IMAX 70, having more noticeably shifting aspect ratios jumping from 2.76:1 to full 4X3.

First time I saw Sinners was in Dolby Cinema and made sure I watched it on a common height screen. Just as I thought, there was just a slight barely noticeable letterboxing of the image, unlike a common width screen where the black bars would have been thicker and more obvious.

The second time I saw it in IMAX 70MM and unfortunately, I was a little disappointed…..

As I suspected, the shifting aspect ratios were quite jarring. Only time it worked better was when the image slowly zoomed from 2.76:1 to 4X3.
Also, a lot of the film (both day and evening scenes) overall was a bit too dark and I’m not sure if that was color correction or was it shot a little too underexposed. There was one scene where the lighting did not match at all. The scene towards the beginning where the Michael B. Jordan was talking to another character outside during the day, wide shots were dark and the medium ISO shots were brighter. In Dolby Cinema this was less noticeable/

I’m just wonder what everyone else’s thoughts were when seeing it in IMAX 70. I still really like the film, but honestly, I think shooting in 2.76:1 in this modern time was a poor choice for the reasons I listed above.
