  • Guitar Lessons (2022)

This is a Canadian movie that was filmed in Alberta. The scenery, the town, the people, the trees and the wildlife are all pretty much the same as what we have around here.

The basic storyline is that a kid inherits an old guitar from a father that he never knew. An oilfield contractor who is reputed to have been a rock star back in the day lives nearby so he asks him for guitar lessons, gets told to beat it, and the story goes on from there.

What makes this movie interesting is that it's a western Canadian movie set in a western Canadian town with all of the western Canadian stuff in it. Part of it is even in Cree (with subtitles).

The movie hasn't got the high polish that a Hollywood production has, and the sound mix is too hot. Apparently the guy they had to do the sound mix hasn't ever done one for a cinema application before and there are differences between what makes acceptable sound for television audio versus a cinema sound system that weren't accounted for. The overall volume is ok, maybe a little louder than the average movie but not awful, but the end result is a bit harsh and tinny which occasionally makes the dialogue hard to understand.

It's a reasonably good movie for what it is; the story is ok and some of it is pretty darn funny.
