I keep seeing ads on Facebook for movie-related items like the one pictured. Usually they're for really popular films like Christmas Vacation, Jaws, Blues Brothers, and (in this case) Blazing Saddles, among others.

But it's always some oddball-named outfit I've never heard of selling these things, and the products are always available "for a limited time only." So I'm wondering....

Are these really licensed by the content owner?

Or are they a scam where the poster uses one of those custom-print companies to make the product, and stays in it until he gets shut down by the copyright owner?

Or are they a full-blown scam, where the post-owner takes a bunch of orders with credit card numbers and then goes on a spending spree?

Has anyone ever bought one of these type of products?

I'm sure it's both: some legit, some not. But the one pictured with Mel Brooks I would think is legit unless someone took the photo in order to sell pirated stuff.

I dont think those are his hands holding the shirt. It looks like someone photoshopped in the hands and shirt to a picture of him just standing not holding anything.

I have some friends who bought shirts that said “Why is the floor all wet, TODD?” and “I don’t know, MARGO” from “Christmas Vacation.” Those showed up.

Generally interest-specific clothing like this is on limited run basis... They'll take orders for 6 weeks and if they get enough orders to make the run profitable, they will, and if not, no one gets charged.

I've ordered several t-shirts this way. One was a Labyrinth themed "Don't go that way" shirt. It finally came in the mail... but the screenprint colors were all fucked up. Before I could get around to contacting them, I got an email saying "oops! We goofed! Your new one is on the way!" Second one was messed up too, though not as badly. Again, before I got around to contacting them, they did the same thing over again and sent a THIRD shirt, this one ended up perfect. So I got the shirt I wanted, and 2 freebies, and didn't have to lift a finger.
