While I can understand where you guys are coming from, I'm of the opinion that Luke is going to be "The Last Jedi" in the new movie because he knows more than anybody that the whole light side vs. dark side mentality needs to end as it has only ever lead to destruction in the past.

There will always be force-sensitive beings, so they need to be taught that they way to be is neutral and not take any sides. I believe this is how he will train Rey because he doesn't want to see another person become conflicted like what happened to Kylo when he was training him.

We also notice other force-sensitive people including Maz in The Force Awakens, and Chirrut Imwe in Rogue One and yet neither of them were Jedi or Sith.
