If there actually was a Thanksgiving celebration as popular history tells us, it would have happened on the harvest moon which occurs in late September or early October instead of late November, after winter has already begun, like we celebrate in the U.S.

That means that the Canadian Thanksgiving is closer to being historically correct than the American version.

Because of that and also because I live less 20 miles from the Canadian border, I always try to remember to give Canadians a thumbs up at Thanksgiving time. [thumbsup]

Cheers! [beer]

LOL! [Big Grin]

When the Pilgrims came, there wasn't such a place as Canada or the United States. Was there? [Wink]

Putting aside ideas of Pilgrims (American) or the exploration of the Northwest Passage (Canadian), the "Time of Thanksgiving" is rooted in the English tradition of Michaelmas, the Feast of Saint Michael. It is a religious feast to celebrate the bringing in of the harvest and the settlement of debt.

Medieval farmers would have to borrow from their landowners in the spring in order to plant crops. They would have to promise to repay those loans when the crops were harvested by giving part of the proceeds to their landlord. The "feast of thanksgiving" was a way to celebrate your debts being paid off. (Like a mortgage burning party.)

I wasn't trying to say that it is so important to think of Thanksgiving as being related to one version of history or mythology, American or Canadian. That's why I said "...as popular history tells us..."

I was trying to say that, whether you view history through an American bias or through a Canadian bias, the original Thanksgiving would have been celebrated on or near the time of Michaelmas which occurs closer to this time of year, the time of Canadian Thanksgiving, as opposed to the end of November when the American version occurs.

You get to spread out the turkey feasts a bit more by doing it our way, too!
