My son watched "Ben Hur" in 2D at a local Edwards videma yesterday and saw the usual "presented in Sony 4K" trailer at the head of the show. I told him that it referred to the projection equipment, not likely the actual presentation, since 3D seems to be limited to 2K releases. Am I wrong? Is the mastering of a movie such as this limited to the Least Common Denominator of technology (in this case, 3D)?

Someone who's running this at their theater in 2K, please enlighten. Thanks!

BenHur_FTR_S_EN-EN-CCAP_US_51-HI-VI-Dbox_2K_PC_20160728_EKN_IOP_OV

2D CPL Listing

BenHur_FTR-3D_S_EN-EN-CCAP_US_51-HI-VI-Dbox_2K_PC_20160728_EKN_IOP-3D_OV

3D CPL listing

Both in 2K rez.

Just one of those issues when it comes to advertising that wrong info is presented to the public.

Warner's SHOULD have encoded the film in 4K but, eh... they aren't like Sony that does after 4K restorations and such, then encode the files as such on mass produced DCP's ('2001: A Space Odyssey' DCP looks hideous by the way)

And Sony is leaving the cinema market anyway. 4K now heads to the DLP spectrum.
