I won't make any friends among the highbrow critics in 'Sight and Sound' or 'The Guardian' for saying this, but I thought that Death Wish was quite good: nicely paced, with believable supporting characters, carefully done locations and atmosphere, and it must have struck a chord at the time it was released, in the middle of, from what I've read, was not a good time to be living and working in New York.

He kind of overdid things with the umpteen sequels, but let's face it, overdoing things was Winner's trademark...

Sorry to read about his passing. I enjoyed his films from the 70's like Lawman, Scorpio and The Mechanic with it's twist ending. They won't go down in history as master pieces, but they sure was great entertainment. I don't believe anyone but Michael Winner would have dared to update The Big Sleep to the 1970's and still keep so much of the original dialogue. Rest in Peace Mr. Winner.
