The French Film Festival has its 20th anniversary this weekend at the Byrd Theatre. One of the high points was last nights presentation of Georges Melies 1902 Adventures of Robinson Crusoe It was thought to be lost but a hand colored print was discovered in 2011 and restored. The project is not yet complete but is in a very presentable state and presented from a DVD for convenience. A pretty amazing 12 minutes, especially considering it was made 110 years ago. It was accompanied by the organ and Melies own narrative. Restoration is being done by Cinema Tech Francais. This was the first public screening of the nearly complete restoration and the first known screening of this work since 1912.
There are excerpts on You Tube but none is complete and none are in the original hand colored version.
