Congratulations to Jacki Weaver for her Best Supporting Actress nomination. She's been around forever and now she's finally been 'discovered'. If she wins, I'm sure she'll be an overnight sensation, just like Geoffrey Rush was for 'Shine'. [Wink]

The King's Speech will very likely take the Best Picture Oscar since it already won the Producer's Guild award for Best Picture. The Social Network was previously the favorite to win Best Picture, but not anymore. David Fincher has a good chance of winning the Best Director Oscar though. We'll pretty much know for sure who will win when the Director's Guild's award is handed out this coming Saturday night (Jan. 29).

On Sunday, the Screen Actor's Guild awards show will air on TNT. That will pretty much telegraph the Oscar winners in the various acting categories. I'll be surprised if Natalie Portman doesn't win the Best Actress award for Black Swan.

I'm praying Black Swan does not win a cinematography Oscar. The ASC has its awards ceremony coming up on February 13. The ASC nominees for the feature film award category are the same as the Oscar nominees. It's likely whatever movie wins the ASC award will win the Oscar as well. I'm rooting for Inception and True Grit as a 2nd choice.

Why is The King's Speech nominated in the Best Sound Mixing category? Not that I have a major problem with The King's Speech but it's conspicuously common for various period/costume dramas that are heavily dialog driven to be thrown a Best Sound gimmie nomination to help pump up that overall total of nominations. When the movie wins Best Picture it makes it more impressive sounding to have something like 7, 10 or 8973 Oscars hauled away at the podium rather than just a couple or so.

I'm voting for Inception for both picture and sound: the cinematography was awesome (and films based), and out of those noms, the better sound mix too. I didn't see Salt, so I guess I can't really say if it was better than the others.

I, like many, also find it ridiculous that Nolan did not get a director's nom for Inception. Just a downright shame. Let's hope they reward him an original screenplay award, something he definitely deserves.

So what will the Academy do to get back at Weinstein this time? Close the awards window to two weeks?

10 stinking best pix noms!. I can't wait to see how they draw that out. I am really looking forward to what kind of production number they come up with for Winter's Bone. Singing and dancing Hillbillies on Meth as portrayed by some Hollywood Dance Studio.

For the 83rd year in a row, the worst Academy Awards show ever [evil]

You must not have seen the show last year. There were 10 Best Pic noms then too. The world didn't end.

I understand why they've gone to 10 Best Picture nominations, but it definitely makes the nominations of most of them seem a lesser event.

Although I had enjoyed TRUE GRIT when I saw it in a theatre and SOCIAL NETWORK on Blu-Ray, I am rooting for A KINGS SPEECH for best picture and Best actor. Although both of the other films were also excellent, KINGS SPEECH is a much better picture. I was surprised Jeff Bridges in TRUE GRIT was not nominated for a Golden Globe but I am glad he was nominated for an Oscar. Although he delivered a award winning performance, it is unfortunate he has to compete against Colin Firth who will win. After watching BLACK SAWN last weekend, I am rooting for Natalie Portman for the roll as a ballet dancer driven mad in that film. I did not think the cinematography was anything special that deserve a nomination but I thought the sound for THE BLACK SWAN was fantastic and should have been nominated in that category.

Not even a nomination for Never Let Me Go in the Best Cinematography category? [Mad]

The films that I like never win these things, but it would be nice if AMPAS would at least see fit to nominate them....

One award I hope the The Social Network wins is Best Score. But I'm a Nine Inch Nails fan. Still, the music was pretty interesting and fitting for the subject matter. The Academy could score some "cool points" by giving Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross the award. They missed another "cool points" opportunity in failing to nominate Daft Punk for their brilliant score of Tron: Legacy.

I'm not going to get up my hopes too much, but The Social Network at least has a shot at the Best Score Oscar since it already won the Golden Globe. I liked Trent Reznor's "Holy Shit" tweet when the winner was announced.

I agree Colin Firth will probably win, but another reason Bridges won't win is because he won last year.

If Bridges did win, would that be the first time two different actors won Best Actor for playing the same role?

Funny, I thought Colin Firth was pretty good, but Geoffrey Rush stole the show.

I wasn't surprised to see Hailee Steinfeld nominated for "True Grit," but I thought she should have been in the Best Actress category.

Here are my predictions for the winners:

Best Picture
I'm going with Toy Story 3 or Inception. None of the other movies have any right whatsoever to be on this list. To hell with 'em. That said, if my theater had stayed open for one more week, we would have been shitfaced with crazy business. We always are when the nominations are announced.

Actor in a Leading Role (or, rather, Best Actor)
Definitely going to Colin Firth. Haven't seen the movie, though.

Actor in a Supporting Role (or, rather, Best Supporting Actor, why try to make it sound all fancy?)
Christian Bale will likely get this one. I thought he overacted and I didn't find him believable in the least, but I still think he'll win.

Best Actress
Either Natalie Portman will get it because she is young or Annette Benning will get it because she is ancient and the Academy wants to make sure she is recognized before she dies.

Best Supporting Actress
Probably Amy Adams.

Animated Feature Film
If "How to Train Your Dragon" wins, that means Toy Story 3 will win best picture. If Toy Story 3 wins this category, Inception had damn better well win Best Picture. Maybe Toy Story 3 can win both categories.

Art Direction
Who cares? This is the boring part of the show.

Cinematography
Black Swan will win because they borrowed my camera to shoot some of it (for reals). Nah, Inception will win.

Costume Design
Who cares? This is the boring part of the show. This is the reason the Academy Awards do not have a larger straight male audience.

Directing
Wow. These are some shitty selections here. I hope they all lose. I hope the Tom Hooper guy wins because his brother or dad probably directed Poltergeist.

Documentary (Full Length)
Haven't seen any of these, but hopefully Inside Job will win because I built that up, played it and it was in scope.

Documentary (Short Subject)
Who cares? This is the boring part of the show.

Film Editing
Nobody is eligible to win since nothing is edited on film any more. Why can't this category just be labeled "Editing"? Stupid fuckers.

Foreign Language Film
Who cares? This is the boring part of the show.

Makeup
Who cares? This is the boring part of the show.

Music (Original Score)
I'll take Inception for $500, Alex.

Music (Original Song)
Probably the Toy Story 3 song, though Randy Newman has always sounded like he has downs syndrome. Also, there is no need to perform each song. Just provide a link to a low-bit-rate MP3 on the screen. Screw the spectacle, people are watching to see the winners and for the host to be funny. Oh, James Franco is hosting? OK, people are watching to see, ummm, hell if I know. He's not much of a draw, in my opinion.

Short Film (Animated)
I make animated short subjects myself and even I don't give a rat's ass.

Short Film (Live Action)
Who cares? This is the boring part of the show.

Sound Editing
Inception had pretty good sound editing and Pixar always does well here, too. Nothing super awesome this year, though.

Sound Mixing
Inception, for sure. Social Network does not deserve to be on this list. WHY DOES EVERYONE HAVE A HARD-ON FOR THE SOCIAL NETWORK?

Visual Effects
Inception is the only worthy movie on this list. It's also the only movie on this list I ever plan on seeing because the rest are dogshit.

Writing (Adapted Screenplay)
Toy Story 3 should get this one but I know Social Network will, though it doesn't even deserve to be on the list.

Writing (Original Screenplay)
Inception is pretty good.
