Well I'm glad to see "Up" get into the expanded Best Picture category at least.

That's only there so Princess and the Frog could win in the animated category. They don't want to shun Disney's return to 2D, so they have to give it something.

Also, I wonder if the movie "Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire" was based on anything. It's so hard to say.

Well I think "Up" will win the animated category. It'll never win Best Picture.

Now it's time for everyone to start working on their gripe post for when "Avatar" doesn't win Best Picture. (although, it's gone against the odds on everything else -- it might on that too.)

I'll be griping if Hurt Locker does not win Best Picture.

As for Avatar: which version was nominated? 35mm 2D? 3D 1.85? 3D 2.35? Imax 3D? (Is there an Imax 2D version?)

I don't get what is supposedly so great about Hurt Locker. It is hella boring.

If I voted on the Oscars:

Best Picture: “The Blind Side”
Actor in a Leading Role: George Clooney
Actor in a Supporting Role: Christoph Waltz
Actress in a Leading Role: Sandra Bullock
Actress in a Supporting Role: Maggie Gyllenhaal
Animated Feature Film: “Up”
Cinematography: "Avatar"
Directing: James Cameron

I have a very specific reason for each of these picks. I do not think that all of these films will win, but these would get my votes.

It would have been nice if Hangover or (as my friends recommend) 500 Days of Summer got one of those 10 slots. It seems like Jason Reitman is oscar's favorite second generation filmmaker. Is up in the Air really worthy of so many nominees? At least Avatar, as mixed as the reviews have been, will help deliver some blockbuster appeal for the awards shows(let's face it, if the show is not going to nominate the best quality, which is subjective anyway, they might as well put in some people pleasing nominees to balance out the appeal and promote the industry via higher ratings).

And why are the women's nominations always so boring? It seems like you gotta have at least 3 foreign women in those categories. I can understand going with a little seen role if the acting was truly memorable and clearly superior to more well known roles. But NINE? I am sure Cruz was good in it, but was she that good to get a nomination? All it does is ruin Oscar's ratings when they nominate little watched roles from movies which are not even critically acclaimed.

Was Jamie Foxx's sister at the Grammys auditioning for a role in Precious 2?

Best song: It delivered on finding the worst nominees as per Oscar habit.

I didnt think Inglorious Basterds was that great back when I saw it despite enjoying it. NOw it looks like one of my favorites in the nominees.

Nobody may agree with me but "Star Trek" deserved a Best Picture nomination. At the least it should get a special award for "Best Job Pulling a Dead Franchise Out of the Ashes".

Remember, the reason to watch the Academy Awards is Bad Dresses, Bad Speeches and Bad Production Numbers. The worser the songs, the higher the probability of a really stinking production number (also, alas, the greater possibility of Celine Dion showing up)
[hmm, the auto spell thinks worser is a word]

Oh, and T-Bone Burnett is Da Man. Just sayin.

Star Trek and Hangover deserved more, Hurt Locker deserved less.

There's an awful lot of "commercial" films in that bunch nominated for Best Picture this year.

That makes me think that the Acadamy may revert to the early 80's type of voting and swing back to more "arty" type films..so to this end I think that either "Precious" or "An Education" may just pull off the big gong.

I certainly hope so anyway....

God forbid should Avatar get Best Picture for the reason many have mentioned regards to the rehashed story and cheesy dialogue. [Eek!]

Anyone want to venture an opinion which five of the ten Best Picture nominees are the REAL nominees and which ones are there to try to create interest in the show and get the rating up?

I am thinking that these four would have made the cut to five:

Avatar
Blind Side
Hurt Locker
Up in the Air

I would guess the last spot would be between Precious and An Education based on the other categories nominees. I know QT was nominated for director but I don't think this is the one for which he or Lawrence Bender get an Oscar.

Most deserved and didn't get a nomination: Stephen Lang in the otherwise horrific "Avatar".

As much as I liked "Star Trek" ( the story was tight and fast-paced, the acting was quite good and Chris Pine is so sexy in his undies, lol) I am GLAD to see it DID NOT get nominated for Cinematography!!

The idiotic WAAAAAAAAAY overuse of lens flare destroyed the look of an otherwise well-shot film!
