What did he do before he worked on 'Chariots of Fire', 'Out of Africa', 'Catch 22, 'Yentl' etc? He made documentary films for British Transport Films, as did a number of other well-known cinematographers and directors.

His last work for them 'All That Mighty Heart', from 1962, is on the London Transport Museum website:

Another of the films there, 'The Elephant Will Never Forget', is one of the best-known of the many BTF productions, from ten years earlier. London has changed a lot since the '50s and '60s.
