We decided to hold a benefit show for Haiti disaster relief next Thursday. We're going to donate 100% of ticket and concession profits to somewhere, haven't figured out where yet. But, seeing the news reports I feel like we need to do something. Anything.

Anybody else on board with something like this?

A church is doing a benefit screening here, we're doing it gratis and 100% of the box take is going.

All shows today at our theater will benefit Haiti relief efforts.
This weeks email newsletter:

Friends,

We are all devastated by the news from Haiti, and we want to do something to help. This Sunday, the State Theatre will donate 100% of the money we make to the people of Haiti. So come see the great movie we're playing, "Up in the Air," on Sunday, and your ticket money will be sent immediately to the relief effort. We are using the wonderful relief agency, Oxfam, because they have people on the ground in Haiti, donations don't go to excessive overhead, and my experience with them is exceptional. If you've already seen the movie, you can drop your donation off in our Haiti donation box in the lobby or at the box office. Or you can send it directly online here.

The real catastrophe will come in the days and weeks ahead. The death toll could double or triple. Haitians have no food, no water, no homes. Please join us on Sunday for our "Help Haiti Day" at the State.

As mentioned, we are holding "Up in the Air" over for one last week. This has been one of the best-attended films since we opened and I encourage you to see it. It's so rare to find a smart film made for adults that doesn't follow the cookie cutter conventions of Hollywood. It's up for six of the Golden Globes that will be awarded on Sunday at 8 pm.

Coming soon we'll be showing "Crazy Heart," "The Young Victoria," "The Last Station" and, more than likely, "The Lovely Bones," plus many more of the best films of the year.

This Monday, in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday, in conjunction with the Traverse City Human Rights Commission, we will show a great film from the 2009 film festival, "Soundtrack for a Revolution." The film traces the essential role music played in the civil rights movement in unifying protestors as they fought for equal rights. Before the film a representative from the American Red Cross will be on hand to talk about the Haiti crisis, and donations will be accepted.
Tomorrow's Saturday 25 cent kids matinee at 10 am is "Osmosis Jones" with Chris Rock and Bill Murray. The Met Opera will present "Carmen" at 1 pm. It's sold out, but a standby line will form. And the Wednesday 11 am 25 cent classic will be "Butterfield 8" with Elizabeth Taylor and Eddie Fisher.

The response to our upcoming comedy festival announcement this morning has been overwhelming! Thank you so much for your enthusiastic comments. As with the film fest, in order to make ticket prices affordable for everyone, we need sponsors and donors to lend a hand. If you'd like to sponsor on the events or contribute in any way, we could really use the assistance. Contact terry@traversecityfilmfestival.org to become a sponsor or to donate.

Thanks again for all your support. And thanks in advance for joining with us to help our stricken neighbors in Haiti.

Yours,
Michael Moore

It's a political blog, but it has a good list of place to send donations
http://digbysblog.blogspot.com/2010/01/haiti-devastation-by-digby-ayayay.html

Also, if you want your money to have an immediate impact, keep this in mind:

Text Message Donations For Haiti May Be Delayed Up To 3 Months
By Laura Northrup on January 17, 2010 7:30 AM

It's quick, easy, and convenient to donate to relief efforts for Haiti earthquake victims by sending a text message, but not such a great idea if you want to be sure that your donations reach people and organizations in need before sometime in April.
Mobile carriers don't actually submit your donation to the charity until after you've paid your bill. Experts agree that the donations will take at least one billing cycle for pledges to reach their destination.
Americans have pledged more than $9 million to Haiti relief efforts using their cell phones this week. $3 million of those pledges are from Verizon customers, and Verizon has announced that they will advance those pledges to charity before customers' payments trickle in.

-----

I'll be at a conference all week (where Michael Moore will be the keynote speaker). Won't be able to set up anything for this week, but as we open Friday with Capitalism, maybe a special showing next week.

We are doing a benefit live show with local bands and a Grammy winning gospel singing group "Sounds of Blackness". We are also collecting a specific list of goods -- medical supplies, food stuff, etc. We have staff who have family in Haiti and have not been able to contact them. It is a dreadful situation.

Results from the Haiti benefit yesterday sponsored by Area 10 Faith Community. Very small crowd, we donated the concession sales, ticket sales and donations from the donation box totaled more than $2400. Movie was "Ghosts of Citie Soleil", chosen by the sponsoring organization.

I recommend everyone just donate to the Red Cross or some other general orginazation. Not to take this too far off topic, but I sort of have a problem with fundraisers for specific relief efforts. Like when people were getting mad after 9/11 because it was reported that the Red Cross was using some of the donation money for much needed computer upgrades instead of specifically in New York. Is it only the severe, widespread disasters that are worth donating to? The Red Cross helps out all over regardless of media coverage. Yes, Haiti is a mess right now, but 2 months ago there were plenty of families somewhere that could have used the help for smaller scale disasters. People only seem willing to give when major events are in their face on the news.

[puke] Would that be the "Redefining Ethics In Modern Documentaries" conference or the "Complaints Without Solutions: My Life In Pictures" lecture? [Big Grin]

Our Haiti benefit was a success. We used the final night of our run of "The Blind Side" and donated all proceeds from tickets and concessions. The cool thing was we actually got more donations from people throwing an extra $20 bill, or saying "put the change toward the benefit," than we did from our actual sales!

It was good for us too because it got quite a few people out to the movie who don't come very often, and we got a front page newspaper article (with large color picture of the theatre) too.

I think a lot of people here were glad to have some place local they could make a donation to, trusting that we would find a good place to send the money -- rather than having to decide what to do. We divided it between one large organization, Doctors Without Borders, and one small one -- a Port-Au-Prince orphanage that is known in this area because 3 area kids were adopted from it. The orphanage was completely destroyed.
