Peter Bogdanovich has three films that would be in my all-time top ten list if I bothered with such a thing, so he wins.

David Lynch would probably be second.

Maybe.

Ron Howard
Steven Spielberg
John Lasseter
Cecil B. DeMille (I haven't seen too many of his movies, but I have liked the ones I've seen -- and he has probably the coolest director name ever.)

Some favorites among the old guard:
David Lean
Alfred Hitchcock
John Ford
Billy Wilder

Some Favorites While Growing Up:
Steven Spielberg
James Cameron
Francis Coppola
George Lucas
Mel Brooks

Some Contemporary Favorites:
Martin Scorsese
Joel & Ethan Coen
David Fincher
Quentin Tarantino
Alex Proyas
Ridley Scott
Bryan Singer

The Pixar crowd seems to be more of a team, but a great team it is. John Lasseter, Andrew Stanton, Pete Doctor and Brad Bird are among the team of many dozens churning out either great or very good movies on a dependable basis.

Woody Allen is my favorite "currently active" filmmaker - but I don't think that I'd call him my favorite director. I'll have to think about that.

I was always fond of James Cameron because he had never made a bad movie (I haven't seen Piranha 2 The Spawning). Avatar may change that. We'll see.

Steven Spielberg has made a bucketload of bad and/or uninteresting movies. War of the Worlds? The Terminal? If ever there were movies that encouraged suicide for the audience... Catch Me if You Can was kind of boring as well.

Obviously Spielberg hit his peak in the 1980s with movies like E.T. and his collaboration with George Lucas on Raiders of the Lost Ark. He also produced some other really fun movies during that period, such as Back to the Future.

Since then Spielberg caved in to make all the snooty critics people happy by making movies geared more for adults rather than movies geared for anyone. Somewhere along the way I think Spielberg lost a bit of that "voice" that made him so successful.

Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan are great movies, but they're only great because of their adult-themed importance. I didn't leave the theater with a "movie high" wanting to see either film again the way I did when I first saw Raiders of the Lost Ark. I think that sums up the difference.

Lately Spielberg has been kind of hit or miss. Technically speaking, he's fantastic. But he hasn't made very many movies during the last decade I've felt like buying on DVD (or Blu-ray). Minority Report is the only movie from Steven Spielberg I've bought since he released Saving Private Ryan.

Loved Alfred Hitchcock's fare when growing up as well as Cecil B. DeMille's classics. I did a stint as an extra in a Ridley Scott film, although I didn't have a chance to rub elbows. Ron Howard is another good one along with Spielburg, Corman... for his warped imagination.

Stanley Kubrick
George Lucas in the '70s
Robert Zemeckis
Ron Howard
Rob Reiner
Francis Ford Coppola

I'd have to think about the rest...if only one, then Stanley Kubrick gets top bill for me.

Oh, yeah. Hitchcock, definitely. John Ford, yes. And George Lucas has always been one of my heroes. Scorsese. Henry Hathaway. Clint Eastwood.

I'm also an Ed Wood fan, but I don't think that necessarily makes him a favorite director... [Wink] Just for shlock's sake.
