Aug. 5 (Bloomberg) -- Ex-Producer Garth Drabinsky was sentenced to seven years for defrauding investors in the Toronto-based production company Livent Inc. His former partner, Myron Gottlieb, received a six-year term.

Ontario Superior Court Judge Mary Lou Benotto imposed the sentences today in Toronto. Earlier, she heard pleas for leniency from former politicians, writers and actors including Christopher Plummer.

The maximum possible punishment was 14 years in prison. Prosecutor Alex Hrybinsky asked for sentences of eight to 10 years. The defendants asked for no prison time, suggesting they be required to visit schools to lecture about their experience.

I will always remember Drabinsky's fight with Columbia/Sony over "The Last Emperor". Back when NYC still had single screen venues and exclusive runs Lowes Cineplex had Emperor booked for Christmas 1987 at several screens when Sony at the very last minute pushed the release back to February 1988 leaving those single screen theatres with no picture and no ability to get a replacement so that they lost the Christmas season. In retalitaion Drabinsky ordered that all Coca-Cola products be removed from the entire circuit (Coca Cola owned Columbia at the time).

So the Cineplex itself got 7 years? Or this guy was an actual Cineplex? It is hard to tell by the way the title is written. [Wink]

When Cineplex Odeon took over the old Plitt Circuit, there was a change of cinema presentation and atmosphere. Yet, a lot of old Plitt houses were discontinued, yet it had to be.
