Read the comments for some hilarious misinformation, such as:

You can see the white light of the DTS time code reader shining into the camera

Like the THX T-shirt is the cinema THX certified and does it have the THX 3417 crossover unit LOL that was Return of the Jedi on the screen was it a 70mm Dolby stereo print being projected with "Lucafilm Ltd THX sound system"?
Um. Uh, I have one of those long sleeve THX sweat shirts (like the projectionist was wearing in that video). Does that mean my house is THX certified?

That's standard for people who like movies but don't know much about film.

He's posted a bunch of other cinerama-related videos

edit: Ah, so another film-techer is just making joke comments. I see.

2nd edit: Just to be clear, the person I'm referring to who "doesn't know much" is the guy who uploaded the vid and made the DTS comment.

i recognized his face pretty easily and even if I didn't, the way-too-long "about this video" mentions the name a couple times.

Not young....just out of focus [Wink] That was 11-years ago...I guess. I'm also guessing that based on the time frame, that THX shirt was realatively new which means I recently had come back from Lucasfilm's THX training program. Hey, depending on the year, I might have even had a Film-Tech shirt on in that booth (though not in 1996).

I guess the guy that posted the video doesn't need to get permission to do so...he never asked me, for sure.

And as for the sound...the reel that was threaded, was in Dolby Digital...but we could have either DTS or Dolby. In fact, those that poo-pooed Dolby's compression as inferior to DTS I would offer them a challenge to "pick the digital that sounds best." I would randomly switch digital systems on a reel by reel basis...they were to pick which sounds best. Almost always, they picked Dolby...if they could tell any difference (many could not and rightfully just enjoyed the movie).

...just too bad those lamphouses weren't Ashcraft SuperCorelites instead of those STRONGS...

who was the other fella in the booth with Steve...the mgr, or Union Rep?

(Bummer, not in 70mm....)

Yep, same procedure that'd I always did .. secure the film to the takeup reel before lacing up the machine, thus not letting the leader touch the floor..

Those "Cinerama - How the West was Won" segments definitely show the three strip panels pretty well..

Good video, Steve ... That booth is what it's all about in the projection end of this industry (something that this new generation will never know about and appreciate..)... Now, which machine was taken out for the conversion to platter, or did they leave them there and just added the platter beind one of them?
