Figured I'd use ShoWest 2006 as an excuse to say Michael will have to find a new place to stay this time around. [Big Grin]

Yesterday, the Boardwalk closed down after 40 years of operation. The casino will be demolished and the tower imploded to make way for MGM/Mirage's new City Center project. The new development will stretch from the Monte Carlo all the way up to the Bellagio. An auction will be held next week for all of the casino, hotel, and restaurant fixtures, furniture, and equipment. The implosion will happen in a couple of months, maybe even during ShoWest.

Up the street, the Stardust announced that it too will close down next year--another old property comes to an end to make way for yet another highrise urban living project. It's neighbor the Westward Ho (locally known simply as "The Ho") has already shut down to make way for the same project.

Across the street from last year's F-T Drink site, the Bourbon Street casino has closed down. It, along with all of the apartments located behind it, will be leveled for some project Harrah's has planned. Harrah's also bought out the Imperial Palace. No official word yet, but many here think the old IP will be imploded too to make way for further expansion of Harrah's. Thus comes to an end the infamous almost-swastika-shaped building.

The old San Remo is now Hooters--I expect this is where most F-T'ers will be looking to stay. [Big Grin]

The old Aladdin is in the midst of becoming the new Planet Hollywood. The conversion project should take about a year. Hopefully the new owners won't make the same stupid mistakes the previous owners did. That property has been cursed with bad luck going all the way back to its days as the Tally Ho.

Oh, and tomorrow morning at 7am local time, the Castaways (formerly the Showboat) tower will be imploded. Stations Casinos is planning another local's casino on the site. Another long-time landmark bites the dust.

Hey Prof, Daryl and I used to always stay at the NOTEL MOTEL... is it still around?

IF not, I guess I'll be at the Paris or the Bally for the big $$$.

I hope not. I don't want to be anywhere near a giant cloud of dust which probably will be full of asbestos. [Eek!]

Asbestos should all be completely removed before any such implosion is to take place at any implosion site.

Big time health issue and liability there if not, and I'm sure that lawsuits are to be kept at a minimum, let alone extinct with such events.

Paul, how abou taking the F-T group out to the Pioneer Saloon in Goodsprings for few beers during Showest. I am not sure if I can make it this year, but if I do I would be happy to take some F-T's out there. I go there every year during Showest and people have always had a blast. The only drawback is the 45 minute drive from downtown Vegas.

Cheers

One can only hope so. I'm tired of every other commercial break on TV featuring mesothilioma lawsuit pitches.

Andrew, would you believe I've been living here off and on since 1964 and I've never been to Goodsprings? [Roll Eyes]

So we'll have to find a local more up on that place than me to lead such a F-T fact finding mission. That would be the perfect excuse for me to tag along and finally get out there.

The Castaways (that still sounds so wierd, it will always be known as the Showboat to us longtimers) came down without a hitch, the first steel building CDI has brought down here, and the first building implosion actually within the city limits (the Strip is in unincorporated Clark County). The air is very stable this morning and the dust cloud is still lingering like a fog over the area. CDI says they have two more to do in the next few months but didn't identify them; I know the Boardwalk is one, didn't know any others were so close.

Last year I stayed at the Flamingo Grand Vacations using a friends timeshare points. I loved every minute of it. No casino, no bells and whistles, 100% private. Very relaxing. I highly recommend it, although, unless you have a timeshare through Hilton, it'll cost you about $400/night.

So has a time and place been set for the infamous "film-tech Martini" as yet? Oh! Did I say Martini? I meant Drink. [Wink]

Absolutely Bob... At the Hotel Continetal... where we can drink as many as we like and it won't matter a bit....

I have relatives in Vegas now so staying there is never a problem [thumbsup]

The Continental?!? [Confused] Ewwwwww! [Eek!] [puke]

You do need to come up to speed Mark. That dump hasn't been called the Continental for quite a few years and has since been closed, disinfected, and sold. These days it's known as Terrible's. [Big Grin]

Also just found out that the Tropicana is not accepting room reservations past April 13th. So there's my guess for the other implosion for this year. Lots of fond memories for me in that place--that's where I officially broke in as a followspot operator in 1974.

I stayed at the Riviera on my last trip to Vegas (7 years ago?). If the Riviera is still standing now, that's the hotel that needs to be imploded. What a hell hole! [Eek!]
