Former Disney duo buy Harlem Globetrotters (Amusement Business)

Shamrock Capital Growth Fund, the investment entity controlled by Roy Disney and Stanley Gold, has acquired an 80% stake in the Harlem Globetrotters.

Mannie Jackson, former owner and CEO of the legendary basketball team, will retain 20% interest and have day-to-day responsibilities. Operations will remain based in downtown Phoenix.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“This partnership will allow the Globetrotters to reach the next level in family sports and entertainment and better serve the team's vast emerging audiences around the world," Jackson, who bought the team in 1993 out of bankruptcy, said in a statement.

Burbank, Calif.-based Shamrock said it plans to increase international visibility and awareness of the team through marketing initiatives. The Globetrotters have played in 117 countries and will celebrate its 80th anniversary next year. The Washington Nationals, the Globetrotters longtime foils, is also part of the deal

Disney is the nephew of Walt Disney Co. founder Walt Disney. He and Gold resigned from Disney's board in December 2003 and began a crusade to force then-chairman and CEO Michael Eisner to resign before calling a truce.
