Oh, NO! This is terrible news. He was my favorite composer.

What a pure talent Jerry Goldsmith was. A class act. He created so many beautiful and memorable moods for the movies and television. He could make a theme out of just a couple of notes, and produce endless variations. His music will live on.

"The Flim-Flam Man" will be playing in my CD player today...

Thats really sad indeed. I had the pleasure of running the first rough cut of Dennis The Menace for him several times. He was a very nice man and a musical genius.

That's one heck of a resume! Here's to Jerry Goldsmith: one of the greatest composers ever to walk the earth. It's a shame I don't own any of his albums. Looks like I am going to have to remedy that one. [beer]

I have several of Goldsmith's scores as, was stated earlier, he was one of the greats.
My favorite is "Great Train Robbery".
This industry again loses one of their best.
There will never be another.

Considering Jerry Goldsmith's age, rumors of his health, and all those concerts he canceled within the past year, I knew this time was soon coming, but I was still in shock when I first read about it yesterday.

Jerry Goldsmith was definetly a composer that set a standard in modern film scoring, and his influence can be heard through many of todays younger composers. His scores to Total Recall, Capricorn One, and Alien for example can be heard in alot of action movie soundtracks. And I don't think any of his influeces will ever go away, plus he's left behind a life times supply of his work for us all to enjoy! [thumbsup]

Jerry had a ponytail, until he was around 72. I always used to say that his magic was in the ponytail, and then he went and cut it off! [Razz]

I'm very sad to hear about Goldsmith. When it came to action scores, he was the master. Of all the soundtracks I own, he's composed the most in my collection (John Williams is a close second.) The man knew how to use the brass section. In fact, some of the cues on his scores are so kinetic that they nearly became exhausting to listen to, and I don't know how the hell the musicians were able to play his compositions. One that comes to mind is the cue titled Break Out on the Capricorn One soundtrack. Another is Hot Water from the Outland score (both scores are available on a single CD album from GNP Crescendo) and I'm sure the National Philharmonic had a lot of fun playing those scores. I know I love listening to them. If I want to hear some fierce horn playing, I blast the speakers with First Blood or Total Recall.

He was extremely prolific, as Christopher's list clearly shows. And of course, he was versatile. A Girl Named Sooner, Rudy, Patton, and MacArthur have cues that get me all choked up inside. The Shadow, The Thirteenth Warrior, and The Mummy are a handful of scores that I can think of off the top of my head that had an exotic Eastern quality. And musically, he's left no style or culture untouched. He's done music for every genre conceivable and had practically dominated the orchestral side of the industry for about half a century. I think about the scores I won't get to hear and its quite depressing actually. [Frown] I envy Mark for being able to say he's meet the man. So long Jerry. We'll miss your talent.
