If a production company goes out of business, their library of films (copyright) is usually purchased by another company. But the original company would likely be listed on any production credits. Some production companies make only one or a few films, and are dissolved afterwards.

IMDB forgot to list the Bette Middler smash-hit "Drowning Mona" which was produced between Destination Films' other two hits, "Bats" and "Thomas & The Magic Railroad."

They cranked out some real stinkers for movies, but they had a great marketing department. I was amazed when we would always get banners/standees/posters/trailers... EVERYTHING... from such a small company.
