Alan Bates, an actor who worked a variety of roles on stage and screen, died Saturday evening in London of cancer. He was 69. An actor who picked his work more for acting than for fame gave us many versions of this rumpled charm of acting. Art house classics such as "King of Hearts", "Zorba the Greek","Georgy Girl"; with more recent fare such as Robert Altman's "Gosford Park" and "Sum of All Fears" with Ben Affleck. His last role will be released in 2004 - Spartacus - a mini-series. He played the role clean shaven since he was under medical treatment. He was knighted this year for the life and work that he loved to do.
