The Sobig worm is running rampant and is currently rated "high risk" for home users.

It propagates via emails with subject headings like "Your details", "Thank you!", "Re: Thank you!", "Re: Details", "Re: Re: My details", "Re: Approved", "Re: Your application", "Re: Wicked screensaver", and "Re: That movie".

I think I've probably received 200 of these emails in the past two days.

Details here

I have a dream that one day Microsoft will build their OS to be a functional and worry free system. You shouldn't HAVE to purchase programs like Anti-virus. That crap needs to be built in to the OS.

If the United States' DOJ had any balls at all they would have broken Microsoft up into two separate companies. One to control the Windows OS and the other to concentrate on all the MS Office and Internet Explorer crap.

Parts of IE, Outlook and MS Office are conjoined into the Windows kernal in order to allow Microsoft to pull little fast ones against their software competitors.

This is part of what has created lots of "Swiss cheese" code that allows for so many of the security holes which continue to plaque the OS. The other factor is Windows trying to be all things to all computer users. Compatibility should only extend so far, particularly the backward kind. Lots of cheapskates want to install the latest OS on a museum piece computer and run decade old software. They just need to run that shit on an old machine. Driver and software standards need to be consolodated. Software developers should write their f**king code correctly instead of taking the usual, buggy half-assed approach common to so many Windows apps.

Call it Draconian or needlessly strict, but those approaches are why Macs and UNIX machines and software have generally performed faster and more reliably than Windows stuff. The hardware and software developers are forced to write to a certain standard. Microsoft has made things less strict for Windows development to attract more software vendors. The vendors like it in that they can take shortcuts, Frankenstein together lots of public domain code modules and other crap to be CHEAPER. In the end you get a compromised computing environment great for things like viruses.
