Isn't it pretty much a no-brainer that "new" trailers would be copyrighted? The "C"-in-a-circle notice isn't even required any more.

There's some issue with older (pre-mid-1970s) trailers; apparently they're considered PD (except for pre-existing material like music, clips from other movies, etc.) if they don't have the copyright notice (most don't), but copyright law has changed considerably since then, almost always for the benefit of the "author" of the work.

A slight spin-off from the thread here:

Many film companies would like to have the trailers back when the theatre is done with them. For the most part, I don't have a problem with that. Some will pay the shipping if they are sent, some will not.

However, I presume some of the mega-plexes would have a major problem with that. It takes time and labor to sort them out, box them up, call UPS or some other shipping facility to have them picked up. Some areas won't allow pickups unless they are designated pick-up points. That transulates to using a POV to deliver them to the shipping site. Some theatres are so cheap that they will not pay milage or gasoline expenses to the POV owners (not to mention time involved) to do that.

I am not for throwing them into the dumpster. There will always be a "Dumpster Diver" to fish them out and peddle them on Ebay. To me, that is totally wrong.

I like the idea of simply tossing a handful or two into a film can (if there is space) and let the film exchange deal with it.

If I break a film down, I don't bother fiddling around removing the trailers unless they will not fit on the reel one shipping reel. I am presently plagued with dead previews.

the article states that after they returned disney's trailers, video pipeline made their own "clip" previews. so they weren't using the "copyrighted" trailers, and were only excerpting 2 minutes' worth of film content. next i suppose disney will sue ebert & roeper. "fair use" seems to mean about as much as "consensual rape" these days.

i think these copyright threads belong in the political forum. that way my lack of a photo will preclude me from expressing my anti-copyright views and getting flamed. the above was not really an anti-copyright view. don't get me started.
