Gigli Farewell Bash

'I Survived Gigli' Farewell Bash Planned in Boston

BOSTON (Reuters) - A Boston radio station is giving listeners a reason to see the film "Gigli," the box office wreck starring Jennifer Lopez (news) and Ben Affleck (news) that some critics have panned as the worst film of the year.

As "Gigli" vanishes from U.S. movie theaters following dismal ticket sales, alternative rock station WBCN is offering to give "I survived Gigli" T-shirts to anyone left in their seats when the lights come up after the final showing at a Boston cinema this Thursday.

Chachi Loprete, the station's creative services director, said WBCN is offering free tickets to 130 "lucky" listeners.

"We're doing this because the movie's been such a bomb," he told Reuters on Tuesday.

Critics have savaged "Gigli." The New York Times dismissed it as a "hopelessly misconceived exercise in celebrity self-worship," while the Washington Post said it was "enervated, torpid, slack, dreary and, oh yes, nasty, brutish and long."

The $55 million film brought in less than $6 million during its first 10 days, according to North American box office estimates issued on Sunday.

In the film, Lopez, also known as J.Lo, plays a lesbian crook who helps Affleck's dim-witted character in a kidnapping plot.

This is funny. I could just smell another "Glitter" in "Giggly".

As an aside, that's the station with the most annoying liners I've ever heard! The worst: (In a whisper, a fast loop is created)... "W-B-C...W-B-C...W-B-C...W-B-C...W-B-C...W-B-C...W-B-C...W-B-C...W-B-C-N!"

Yeeuck! [puke]

Actually Tim... WBCN Boston is a well known station in the industry, and has a very long history in the Boston area. This station helped launch the careers of many of todays more famous bands including U2.

I know it's a big station, and there are hundreds of others like it, but it doesn't give them license to annoy listeners. Many stations in Boston are big, simply because they're in Boston (e.g., WRKO, WBZ) - that's one of the major radio markets in the country.

Any station that pulls numbers in a major market has influence, that's not unique to WBCN.

WBCN should have awarded a weekend in Times Square. The AMC Empire will hold over a print of Gigli for a 3rd week. [Wink]

Incidentally, WBCN is more than a famous rock 'n roll radio station -- it's the radio flagship for the New England Patriots of the NFL.

Well, you do get to hear the retarded kid's rendition of "Baby Got Back" one more time at the very end of the credits. That made it all worthwhile.

Just wait until Marci X a.k.a. [bs] comes out next week. This one stinks from so far away it's not funny. Of course, it won't take much to outgross Gigli.

"Marci X" has been on hold for over a year by Paramount. Marci is not that bad of a film, it fluff. I ran it many times over a year ago in different versions.

It's amusing to note that there is still a huge "Gigli" billboard next to the Massachusetts Turnpike near Boston, yet no theatre within a 50-mile (at least) radius is playing the film. [Roll Eyes]

Tim--be glad that you didn't hear the WFNX promos; they're far worse than the ones on WBCN.
