Next major holiday will be our Thanksgiving holiday which is Thurs Nov 28. Most businesses have the following Fri as a holiday as well, allowing us a 4 day weekend. After that its Christmas.

When visiting the Western States, think National Parks. Don't get sucked in to the morass that is L.A. Ultimately you find the artifice to be repugnant.

Since you will be visiting an army base in Colorado I can only assume it to be Fort Carson in Colorado Springs. You’re in luck here as it is quite beautiful there. Just stay away from politics and religion. Colorado Springs is slightly to the right of Attila the Hun. It makes Utah look like a liberal playground. (That's a Joke son. )

Neat things to see around Colorado Springs:

Garden of the Gods http://www.gardenofgods.com/
Seven Falls http://sevenfalls.com/
Royal Gorge Bridge http://www.pikes-peak.com/attractions/Royalgorge.htm
Pikes Peak Cog Railway http://www.cograilway.com/

After Colorado Springs I recommend driving through Utah and Nevada to California. It will blow your mind. Stay off of the Interstate Highways and stick to state roads, they are much more interesting. On the way you might want to consider these National Parks:

Mesa Verde http://www.nps.gov/meve/index.htm
Arches National Park http://www.nps.gov/arch/index.htm
Zion National Park http://www.nps.gov/zion/index.htm
Joshua Tree National Park http://www.nps.gov/jotr/index.htm
Mojave National Park http://www.nps.gov/moja/index.htm

If you can only pick one, try Zion.

National Parks and America’s friendly nature are the best of what we can offer. Of course if I were in L.A. I would do the movie theatre/production tour.

ArcLight Theatres http://www.arclightcinemas.com/homepage.jsp Home of the Cinerama Dome.
Grauman’s Chinese Theatre http://www.seeing-stars.com/Theatres/ChineseTheatre.shtml
Kodak Theatre http://www.kodaktheater.com/

There are many others. Good Luck

Presidents Day is the 3rd Monday of February; in 2003 that'll be 2/17. Easter varies from year to year; next year it comes rather late (4/20).

2003 United States Federal Holidays

Schools, Banks and Government are usually closed on these dates.

Wednesday, January 1, New Year's Day
Monday, January 20, Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Monday, February 17, Washington’s Birthday
Monday, May 26, Memorial Day and My Birthday (Mountainfilm)
Friday, July 4, Independence Day
Monday, September 1, Labor Day (Telluride Film Festival)
Monday, October 13, Columbus Day
Tuesday, November 11, Veteran's Day
Thursday, November 27, Thanksgiving Day
Thursday, December 25, Christmas Day

Working in a cinema means working each and every one of these holidays. The good news is that usually attendance is up.

Working in a cinema also means taking Tuesdays off which is much better for shopping without the crowds and taking a holiday any old time I want.

I tried to find a list of Religious Holiday’s on the web but all the search engine brought up were articles on the appropriateness of religious holidays in Public Schools. You’re on your own there.

Paul,
Please call me when you come to Utah!! I'd be happy to show you around Salt Lake City. Its a really interesting town and there are many beautiful canyons only minutes from here. I have a friend that is a large format projectionist whos wife is from New Zealand so I'll have to get you all together too! He is from Hawaii himself.
As far as Parks in Utah, either Zion, or Bryce would do well. I personally prefer the Moab area over just about any place in Utah! It has the most to offer. Check out http://www.moab-utah.com/
Of the larger parks I actually much prefer Bryce as many of the trails are easily walkable in only a few hours, or less so you can go down in and really see what its like. At Zion much of the spectaculuar stuff is quite a hike to get in...things like slot canyons and that sort is not easily accessable for everyone. There is a large format theatre at Zion too that you can go to. The film there is pretty good.

Hi Paul,

I will like to have the opportunity to meet you when you are in Hawaii. The offer to go theatre hopping still stands. You had indicated in a previous email you sent me that you only went to the Dole Cannery Theatres during your last visit to Honolulu. If you can spare the time, I would like to take you to some "Real" theatres while you are here as well as to some of Oahu's scenic attracrion.

-Claude

Paul, I also live in Salt Lake City, and would love to meet you. Mark has a better grasp on what is around here, and he isn't even from here! I need to get out more!

Depending on how long you are going to be here, I would love to give you a tour of our Hale Theatre, with our in the round stage productions and our million dollar stage that has five independant sections that move 11 feet up and down. If there are tickets to any shows maybe you would like to see one, but we usually sell out many weeks in advance.

Dave.
