I have a friend here in the US who expects to make a trip to Austalia (Adelaide), New Zealand, India, & other destination, & who wonders about how to connect to the internet & access e-mail while in those areas.

He's got an AOL account, & found that AOL has a dial-up number in Australia - with a $3.75 per hour surcharge. How do the laptop-plugging globetrotters do this?

You can check AOL from the web as well. So it doesn't matter if he has access to an AOL dial up or not... just as long as he can somehow get on the web he should be good to go.

Over here there are, whereever you are, small pay as you go internet places. I went over Oz & N.Z. & logged in from almost everywhere.

How do you find them, what should he look for?
How much do they cost?

Also, my friend is intimidated about going to the other side of the globe because he wonders if his hair will stand straight up when he gets there. Is that a common grooming problem for Merkin visitors in the antipodes?

Find them on almost all main streets. If all else fails go to a public library.

We can't afford hair down this way so bring supplies of grooming products.

Don't forget voltage adapters for razors etc.
