Is it running this Saturday, September 7th? If so, what time? Is it likely to sell out? Would I need to book in advance? The last time I saw it, just a few days after it opened, it was only about half full, so I could just buy a ticket on the day.

Also, what time does the show finish?

Thanks, that's longer than I thought it was, but if I'm quick I might have time to see an IMAX film afterwards.

How does this Cinerama business work out? Do you keep the print and track on site permanently, or are they brought in for each show? Who owns the print? Who owns the rights? Can you run the film any time you want to, or would you have to negotiate a separate deal for any extra shows? Do you pay a fixed fee per show, or per year, or is it a percentage of box office, or what?

Are any of the Russian Kinopanorama films still available, and, if so, have you thought of bringing one of these over for the Widescreen festival one year?

Well, whether Stephen manages to make it or not, it looks like there are going to be two invaders from York on Saturday... Darren and I are planning on coming over.

I'm ashamed to say that, despite having lived pretty close to Bradford for almost three years now, I've never seen the Cinerama show. I'm really looking forward to it...

Leo, I should be there. We have been working like mad all week at the College to get everything ready for the new term which starts on Monday. We have just a few computers, about 50, left to install, and a few minor, (I think), problems left to sort out; as long as that is finished by tomorrow evening, I think it will be, then I will not have to come in on Saturday, and I will be coming up to Bradford. I will look out for you. I still haven't got round to sending my photo to Brad, I am middle aged, balding, and will be wearing a Loew's Jersey Theatre shirt, black with a white line drawing of the theatre on it. I can see the shirt from here, and I have just noticed that it has the English spelling of theatre, that's odd.

Hope to see you Saturday, the Picturevill is a rather nice cinema.

Well, see above... Even though the pic was taken in my cinema days, I still look roughly like that (hopefully). I'll leave you to imagine what the colours should be!

Many US Movie Theatres use theatRE. For example:

Many US Movie Theatres use theatRE.

It's only a VERY rare, statsitically insignificant few US movie or live houses that use the spelling theatER. Basicallly, it's a hand-me down from when Noah Webster was establishing in his dictionary new US spellings differentiated from British via cleaned-up phonetical spellings, etc.

None of the folks running theateres wanted any of it, not the least because:
1. Most of the actors, managers & theatere people at the time were English (like a large section of the US population)
2. There's a sort of exotic snob appeal, poseur quality, fascination & thus marquee value in the US with the theatRE spelling

So basically there was a split, the people whose lives revolve around trafficking in & policing printed words in the US, like newspaper writers, English teachers, etc., standardized, use, & demand the use of theatER.

But the people who work in the theatere bidness use the spelling theatRE.

Neither side's gonna budge an inch, too much ego & control issues here.

You'll often things like on a marquee "REX THEATRE", but in any newspaper or magazine story the spelling style police will "correct" it so that all mentions have the spelling "REX THEATER".

That's interesting, I've just had a look at the Loew's web site, and 're' seems to be used every time, not just when referring to this theatre, but to theatres in general. All the signs on the building, and the reproduced publicity just say 'Loew's Jersey', and don't mention the 'T' word.

I've only ever seen the 'er' version on anything American before; this would always be in print, or on film or television, I've only spent five days over there, and during that time I didn't notice the word at all.

Which version would be used on a legal document, an application to build a theatre, or a licence to operate one, for example?

The impression I got of this was that in US & Canadian English, 'theater' meant live stage shows and 'theatre' meant film exhibition. Sorry I didn't realise that the issue was a lot more complex.

Dick: I'm really looking forward to tomorrow, sorry we won't see you. Simon [Popple] tells me that this is a show not to miss...

Dick,
Both myself and Leo and one of my projectionists Charlie, really enjoyed the 'This Is Cinerama' last Saturday.

Please thank Tony Cutts for showing us around all the projection rooms and being such a nice and informative man!

Many thanks

Darren
