<Grumble> In the hopes that lurkers from the film companies will take action and run these slimey pirates off the net, I propose that any pirate site you happen to run across be made public here. Pirate
DVDs and videotapes have already ruined Bollywood exhibitors.

No matter what you think of Hollywood accounting practices and morals, these pirates will put theatres out of business and people out of work if allowed to exist unchecked.

Here is one to start it off:

Lord of the Rings $11.88. Somehow, I don't think this is legit, since only the screening DVDs have been released.

why pay for something when you can get it for free?... or at a really cheap price, anyway. pirates have been around ever since there has been a market for anything. nothing will ever stop it.

Not that what they are doing is in any way justified but...

From memory the site is based in a country where if a movie is not released there approx 1 - 2 months after its initial release in the country of origin then copyright (for that country) is relinquished.

That brings up another legal issue, is it leagle to export the discs?

This is all very hazy from an article I read a few months ago

Anyone with information on suspected video piracy operations is urged to call the MPAA at 1-800-NO-COPYS (1-800-662-6797). Callers who provide information that leads to the arrest and conviction of persons engaged in video piracy may be eligible for a reward. A separate reward will be paid to the first person who provides the location of a pirate video lab. The pirate lab must consist of 30 or more VCRs at one location used to produce unauthorized copies of MPAA member company motion pictures.

Information may also be furnished via E-Mail if directed to the email Hotline at the MPAA in Encino, California. Informants may remain anonymous if requested.

A friend of mine bought a pirated dvd of MI:2 a couple weeks after the movie was released on the big screen, only to find it was some guy that set up a home movie camera in the theatre and recorded it that way. The added bonus was that it had Malaysian subtitles.

It's a big world, but the MPAA has been very active in prosecuting movie piracy worldwide:
http://www.mpaa.org/anti-piracy/press/index.htm

Any erosion of the first run "window" for theatres by piracy hurts the movie industry as a whole. The job you save by reporting piracy may be your own!

When I was in NY a few weeks ago, we went to Chinatown, and on nearly every street corner there was a vendor selling pirated tapes and DVD's, and in some cases there were cops nearby. Wonder how they get away with it.
