Here is the link to a column in todys Deseret News regarding the Villa Cinerama Theatre here in Salt Lake City. http://deseretnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,295014992,00.html

Also check out Grant Smith's website at www.villatheatre.com

For those that are not aware it looks like the Indian Hills Cinerama in Omaha is about to undergo demolition. Starting with the lobby first. The Indian Hills had the largest Cinerama screen in the world. 105' on the curve. It seems like the Omaha historical landmark people better move fast on this one.

Here's another one from Boxoffice Magazine:
http://www.boxoffice.com/scripts/newsviewstory.asp?ID=732

"The Southcenter Theatre — one of the area's largest remaining single-screen movie houses —
appears doomed. The last 70-mm Cinerama-capable theater to be built in North America is to be
demolished to make way for a new Bahama Breeze restaurant, according to a notice posted on
the building," reports the Seattle Times."

The Indian Hills lobby was demolished yesterday. The (cinerama) auditorium must wait for asbestos removal. The three smaller auditoriums have been gone for weeks.

Check www.villatheatre.com in day or so as more will be posted on the Villa Web Site. I will also send in pictures to Brad as soon as I can. We are going in to document the whole place on 4X5 film on the 18th of this month just in case it meets the Indian Hills fate.

Mark, how about doing a couple of shots with 3-D in mind? Take one 4x5 image, move the camera about 65mm left or right, and take another. Interocular distance isn't critical, and a slightly wider stance might even be good on a far shot. The curve of the Cinerama screen should show well in 3-D. I can merge two jpgs for a red/green color 3-D jpg suitable for use on the web.

Jerry, Thats a really great idea and I will definately do that for sure. Thats really the only way to get any idea of the depth this screen really has. Does the focal length of the lens I use have any bearing on the 3D quality? I have both a 90mm and a 65mm Rodenstocks that will work well for 4X5. I guess I can also do it with both lenses and we can see what may work best.

Gord, There are more booth pictures posted on the site now. The amp rack only has the amps in it for the surround channel. I'm not sure why the fan. Perhaps one died in one of the amplifiers. Screen channel amps are back stage. Its also obvious from the rack that the Todd-AO mag system was by Ampex.

Mark, seeing how it is 4x5, I'd opt for the wider angle shorter fl. It is always possible to crop, but adding to the picture can be a problem. You've got plenty of information on that size negative.

Avoid the temptation of twisting the camera between shots to exactly center the image. Doing so adds distortion into the picture. The wider the interoccular, the smaller the perceived size of the object in presentation and the greater the 3-D effect.

The wide interoccular hyperstereo seems to work well if the seperation is about 1/100 of the distance- 100 feet to screen = 1 foot interoccular, PROVIDED that there is nothing in the close foreground that will make the eyes go bonkers trying to resolve.

Generally sticking with a 2.5" seperation and not going beyond 6" for interior shots of a large auditorium should be fine.

One of my regrets has been not working with press and large format photography. 2 1/4 square was the biggest I ever did on a pro basis.
Good thing I'm not along, I'd drool on your equipment.

Oh, no! Drool would make it weigh even more!
What's your rig, Mark?

I have two cameras......
The 4X5 is a Cambo from Holland. I have 3 lenses for it...90mm, 135mm, and 210mm, All Rodenstocks. The other is a Galvin 6X9 and is my favorite camera. It weighs less than a good 35mm SLR does...Around 2.5 lbs with lens. I have a 65mm Super Angulon and a 100mm Rodenstock for it. Its my hiking camera. Everything fits into a nice light weight backpack that totals about 7 lbs. It includes Camera, 6X9 Horseman roll film back, two lenses, Pentax spot meter, dark cloth, lens cleaner, tissue, cable release, and a dozen rolls of film plus an 8X10 80% gray card.
I've hiked Bryce canyon with the 4X5....people thought I was from National Gepgraphic and I was even noticed by all the yuppies running around with their Hasselblads. They probably thought I was crazy but you should see the 4X5 transparencys! I usually shoot Fuji Velvia in both cameras if its out doors. Not sure what I'll do at the Villa. I do have access to alot of lighting instruments though and I'll most likely shoot tungsten Ektachrome there.
Your drool wouldn't add much weight to the Galvin, probably a little to the Cambo though.
