Hi all

As noted elsewhere I visited the Balwyn Cinemas in Melbourne recently and was in the larger cinema on the 1st floor.

After the film I walked out of the cinema and noted thatjust outside the doors there was the display of what appeared to be an antique projector. I thought that someone might know a little more about the projector and how it came to be in the cinema. We have some knowledgable Melbourne projectionists in this forum - do they knwo anything about the projector?

Also in the large cinema there are what appear to be bright relective bits on the ceiling that appear like stars. I thought this added a nice touch. Have readers come across other cinemas with unique touches like this?

Thanks Peter

Peter,

The Village Twin cinema in New Farm, Brisbane has a moonscape on the curved ceiling. Each of the craters has a colour lamp in it. It was a devil of a job to replace the lamps as some of them were only accessable from scaffolding, some were able to be replaced from the ceiling but it was a risky job as the ceiling was plaster and the catwalks did not extend to all areas.

The audience participation speakers for the 4 track 70mm (not 6 track as the left channels and the right channels were wired together) were mounted in larger craters on the lower section of the wall.

I first saw 2001-A Space Odyssey there back in the early 70's. The Blue Danube Waltz was superb as the background music to the spacecraft floating in space as they prepared to land on the spacewheel, only to have it continue as they continued the trip to the moon.

Regards,

Michael.
