To my shock today for the movie 'Bigger' at the AMC Metreon in San Francisco CA in space #2 they have the auto black masking working again. I checked around and most of all the other auditoriums had the motor masking working. It had not been working in all cinemas the last few months. Talking to a Dolby Cinema® guy today seems AMC is turning off the nice red side lights and the ceiling over speaker red lights for the Dolby Atmos® Dolby Vision Cinema® at the Metreon in cinema lucky #13. They are just going to have blue lights going down the side cove only. What a waste putting in the red and now they are to be turned off. They need to keep the red LED's on when people come in then switch to blue during the trailers then either keep on the new blue very dim or turn off during the feature. If you like the red look check It out soon because it is about to go thanks to AMC's no showmanship look.

So, it's news those days when the movable masking is actually working? [Smile]

I can only applaud the switch from red to blue, since due to local regulations the isle lighting often cannot be turned down entirely, the blue will most likely be far less intruding in dark scenes.

Be happy any masking is working in an AMC. I used to work for them. They seem to have a new thing now in remodeled locations, that the screens are the floating type that are off the wall a bit and there is no masking; only non movable black masking behind the screen edges. Their logic is with digital, you don't need masking to mask off the screens because the edge of the digital picture is sharp unlike the shadow of the aperture plates in film. It reminds me of the days of working for the independent theatre owner who didn't want to spend the money for masking.
