Hi Guys;

I've always been fascinated with theaters and their operations, how they work, how they get started, why they close, etc. I recently was pointed at this forum, and I hope not to annoy with too many ignorant questions, but I'd like to hear from the owner/operators regarding how they got started, where they learned the ropes, and what keeps them up at night.

If there's a FAQ I missed somewhere I'm happy to start there, please just let me know. Also happy to be pointed at any relevant threads.

Thanks,
Mike

What keeps me up at night: That's an easy one. Deciding whether, and how much, to raise prices. I probably lose more sleep over that than any other single thing.

You can find out about how most people got started by reading the "who the HECK are you" thread.

Thanks for the link but I meant a FAQ about the industry, not about using the board itself. I'll check out the who are you thread, thanks!

For a while, I wasn't working at one at all. I am slowly building up an acupuncture practice; rent space from a chiropractor near the Crossroads area of Bellevue two days a week.

But recently I started part-time at Lincoln Square Cinemas in downtown Bellevue. They mentioned a possible opening for projection stuff but I have no idea when/if that'll happen. Nice place and mostly nice people from what I've seen.

You're one of the poor souls who confuse Halloween and Christmas?

Lately, what keeps me up is figuring out how to convert to digital for the cheapest possible price, which a reasonable amount of functionality for my staff and customers.

It's a great business, and a humbling one. Most theatre owners are happy to help newbies get started. Most will also lend you a bag or two of popcorn, oil, or soda if your order didn't come in. Even if they are direct competitors. Gotta love that!

Working nights, usually 5-2am every night. Then large amounts of soda and being an insomniac. Guessing the soda helps with the insomniac part though.

No Problem! Just do what many other theater owners do:
1) Cut staff & fire anyone who works for more than minimum wage
2) Hire janatorial service to only clean every-other-day
2) Cut back on heat in the winter & air conditioning in summer
3) Raise your admission & concession prices

That looks more like "how NOT to convert to digital!"
