No, this isn't a midnight screening. They are running a full-day set of screenings of SUPER 8 on their IMAX screens starting late morning.

Don't know if this is an AMC exclusive or other locations will be joining in.

They are giving away a free small popcorn with another concession purchase with this event.

We are doing this as well with our 15/70 print of Super 8. We will also be offering the free popcorn (This is a promotion from Paramount. Its a decent film, going to have a hard time finding a crowd though.

-edit because just found out we are giving it out

FREE popcorn?

I do an annual "free children's show" in December and the first year I had my theatre in operation I decided to be nice and give away free popcorn for that show.

NEVER AGAIN.

All kinds of people took the popcorn just because it was free even though they apparently didn't want it. After the show I was literally cleaning up popcorn with a grain shovel that I usually use for moving snow.

Ain't gonna be no more free popcorn 'round here. No siree!

According to Boxoffice.com, approx. 300 locations (239 Imax) are starting a day early in an effort to create some buzz.

Seems to me that the terms "IMAX" and "get the buzz out" are mutually exclusive. The IMAX in my area (Lancaster PA) where Super 8 is showing charges $15.50 for an adult ticket and $13.50 for a childs ticket. A tough sell where people pride themselves on their Pennsylvania Dutch heritage (translation: they are cheap).

If they really want to get the "buzz" going (meaning get people to actually see the picture) what they should have done is the old fashioned "Free Preview" at a conventional theatre - either one where the tickets are given away or where you pay to see the current feature and get the preview for no extra charge.

A free popcorn if you buy another item? Good Grief Charlie Brown!
