What to you call the marquee items that are more than one letter stuck together to be used as a single word in a smaller space than would be required to spell it out with individual letters? ie: "with" or "and" or "the"

It's been thirty years, but they used to be called "word plates" , or at least the flat style was. I believe the slotted style was called the same, when they were still being made. At least that's what Wagner called 'em.
