Does anyone have well written job descriptions/expectations for box office attendants, concession workers and ushers.

After taking over my theater and meeting with each employee they have never seen a job description or been give expectations of their position.

If most of your employees are high school kids, don't even waste your time with a written job description. It will be in the trash or lost within ten minutes.

Work beside each employee over the next few weeks ascertaining both strengths and weaknesses. Kids need guidance from a competent teacher who wont BS them at meeting time.

Older workers such as women who need something to do when their kids are at school or new retirees looking for some extra cash while still being able to get 100% social security are more the hand out/ job description types. Especially if you just took over a place where the last manger had a loyal crew and was older than you.

Good luck.

I have to disagree with the above post. It is important to have a job description that accurately portrays responsibilities and expectations. Not only is this important for the hiring process but it is also important for employee development.

Look at it as a check list. Your assistant managers and supervisors should ensure that these skills are trained to each position. Cross training becomes easier when there are actual skills that are to be trained. Include these lists in employee record jackets and keep them continually updated. That way you and the employee get a fair assesment of their worth!

Also, the statement about high school kids is unfair: I have gotten so much quality work out of high school level kids it is unreal. The key is to continually challenge them and supervise. Yes, they will slack if they get bored and know it doesn't matter because nobody is watching but discipline is not automatic it is instilled over time by high expectations of quality performance.... Besides isn't that why they pay you the big bucks!! Ha.

That's called lighting a fire under their ass and making sure it doesn't go out. [Big Grin]
