I realize that this topic may be else where but I couldn't find it. Hell I may have even been the one that posted it before don't think so.

How many use Movie Tunes for their pre-show music? Does Movie Tunes do something specific for Drive-Ins.

Are their other providers for pre-show music? Is there a provider specific for drive-ins?

Just do a search for "Movie Tunes", you'll find at least one other thread that goes into deep detail about how awful it is.

I don't know of any specific music service for drive-ins.

Mike I know how bad it is the people I use use it. I don't exactly use it here but some of their music does play. The man pushes what he is paid to push I know that.

there use to be a goup that did drive-in pre-show music it was alright certainly better than what is available today from what I have seen. I would like to find an alternate source that is a bit less structured to the got to sell this music and more in line with music from movies.

At our theater we use Cinema Sounds, but it has this irritating habit of advertising for itself, as if people in the theater want to buy time on it. I don't know of anything for drive ins.

In the UK, cinemas usually just play a music CD for non-sync sound. Sometimes it's related to the movie that's about to come on (they played some James Bond music
before Casino Royale showed), but most of the time it's just some music CD they have.

I haven't any experience of Movietunes or Cinema Sounds; I don't think they operate in the UK. The cinemas probably have some agreement with the CD producers to play the music in 'public performance' before a movie, otherwise it would violate the 'private home use' license agreement for the music on CD.

My guess is they're just playing a CD with either no thought as to any agreement or are simply assuming no one will come after them.

There is a music service specifically for drive-in theatres.

Ron, you want Drive-In Radio. It is EXACTLY what you want. It is a subscription based service, it's not free, but well worth the price you pay. We have used their service for the last 5 years. They send you 2 new disc every two weeks. Each disc is just over an hour long, and broken up into a combination of 12-14 minute music segments and 30 second and 60 second drive-in commercials specific to your drive-in. Each drive-in on the subscription gets the same music, but the commericals in-between the music are custom tailored to your theatre. You write the text of the commercials, send it to them and they'll layer it over background music, record it with a professional announcer.

I was a disc jockey in Nashville for 18 years prior to building my drive-in. I have the equipment, I have the music, and I have the voice for radio, what I don't have is time.

Shoot me a private email and I'll send you one of my disc from last year as a demo.

I believe Rodeo Jack also uses Drive-In Radio at his theatre.. I'm sure he'll chime in here if he sees this.

Most of the places I've worked for over the years have simply played pre-show music from CD's, LP's, Cassette and yes, even 8 Track cartridges.
(Ouch! [Eek!] I've been doing this for a long time!)

In the past, I don't recall any of them worrying about licensing. But I think that situation is changing. I'm aware of several SF theaters recently receiving letters from ASCAP informing them to "cease & desist" from using music CD's unless they pay a yearly licensing fee. The fee stated in the letter I saw was was several hundered dollars per year and was ascessed based on the number of screens and seating capacity of the theater(s).

In the UK cinemas pay an agreed annual monetary sum to the Performing Rights Society.
This covers the cost of any royalties due on the non-sync music.

Barry, thanks this a great help it isn't my Drive-In it is reopen I'm consulting on and will do the booking for. The drive in has been shuttered for 20 years and the new owner is doing things right so this will help a great deal!

At one theater chain, they had old PC's with Media Player, which were distributed to each auditorium. The PC's were networked to the internet. The home office could upload / change the playlist whenever they wanted, such as to play Christmas music, etc.

I think I've used 'Drive-In Radio' about as long as Barry... maybe just a year less. I think his service is first class. It's entertaining, and drives customers to your concessions. Very responsive company and well worth the money.

Jack (big fan)

Barry, do you supply your preshow for the Twin Hills DI outside of Lexington KY? I was there last year and forgot to as the owner what service he used. If that was you -- AWESOME, bro! I was very impressed. I used to do preshow for non-theatricals when I was young, ambitious and had time. Loved putting them together.

Frank,
Sorry... it wasn't me. I don't own or work for Drive-In Radio, I'm merely a customer on their subscription service. Could I do it... yeah, but for me it's totally a matter of convenience and time. I used to be a full-time disc jockey in Nashville and when I gave it up 5 years ago to go into the drive-in business, I was making a heck of alot more money than I do with both the drive-in and my day job. I enjoyed it immensely, but definely got burned out on the hours and the lugging around of equipment.

I've got a picture on the "Photos Page" of our website where Bill Booth from "Drive-In Radio" and his family came out to our theatre last summer to watch Hair Spray. First time I had seen him in several years.

Barry, I had a face for radio. [Wink]

Ron, as long as he's going first-class, you'll want to get him fixed with some first-class screen advertising trailers:

Screen Attractions produced the first new intermission clock in over 25 years... as well as a compliment of rolling stock generic policy and institutional trailers. The best custom merchant and special-announcement trailers, too, at the lowest prices on the market - all in Dolby SR stereo. What a combination! [Wink]
