I do not know about how these two films were advertised in newspapers elsewhere but here in Honolulu, both BEOWULF and SWEENY TODD never had a picture ad on opening day or any other time when other less obscure films did. Even the dreadful ATONEMENT had a nice ad last Friday but SWEENY TODD did not. The only way to find a house playing it is to check each theatre chain's directory advertisment. What exactly is going on here?

My first guess, and it's only a guess, is the film companies (Warner bros being the distributor for Sweeny Todd, I forgot who distributed Beowulf) felt the television ads were enough and simply didn't need to run coop ads in the newspaper.
The other films you mentioned likely had the demographics that would be more likely to read newspapers than the ones who would see Beowulf.

Paramount is the distributor for both of these films in the US. Warner is responsible for Sweeney internationally.

Oh yes...Paramount.
They are owned by Viacom, which owns lots of cable networks and CBS, and would be more apt to promote films through these outlets and less in print advertising.

In this small market there doesn't seem to be any consistent pattern as far as which movies get display ads and which ones don't. For example, right now "No Country For Old Men" still has a display ad even though it's down to only evening shows on a single screen. Other current bigger releases get no display ads at all.
