I know we had a discussion going a long while back about showing kids films via LCD projector during a "hall rental" and the various legal and monetary ramifications, but cannot find the thread. Anyone remember?

If you wish to do LCD movies, you will need a license from Criterion or whatever non-theatrical agency is responsible for the movie you wish to run. These can be expensive and might not be worth while when you consider all the factors involved. Some movie companies don't like you using "their" time to run after release shows, so you might want to be careful. Remember, if the main show you are showing is a children's type movie, they also expect it to be run for matinees. Sometimes, regardless of the target audience, they was all show times. Just a thought to consider.

There are theatres we service that have digital projectors. Some of these locations rent out theatres to individuals for parties and the individuals bring their own personal DVD's. I wonder how this sort of thing stands since the customer is providing his/her own DVD and has full use of that cinemas facilities through the paid rental time. Of course these are private parties and not open to the public.

Here's a link to Movie Licensing USA, a division of Swank Motion Pictures:

Movie Licensing FAQ

Though the link is aimed at libraries, I'd say it's safest to not show commercial entertainment 'home video' in any venue outside one's own home without proper licensing.
