I'm looking to soundproof two small auditoriums... the auditorium walls will double as a small art gallery, so fabric / drapes are out of the question.

Does anyone know of any solid, durable soundproofing material? Something that could potentially have a nail driven through and be able to support a framed piece of art?

Dan,
Well, I never use nails to hang picture on a wall, I usually use hangers. Ya never want to drive a nail through or into a sound proof wall. To do so will cause leakage... pun intended! You need to consult with an architect for this special purpose, or consider installing special track from which pictures can be hung by wire without the use of nails. I am assuming that all your sound proof walls will be dounble walls with multiple layers of drywall...right?

Head over to a REAL building supply (not a home center) and ask about the products called "Slot Wall". These are a kind of formica-covered wall paneling with slots cut in, used universally on walls in mall stores. Instant ways to hang hangers, and some of them are available as soundproofing.

Not all are soundproof or sound-dampening so specify what you are doing. The soundproof versions are "softer" in texture.

One other issue will be the constant changing room accoustics especially the reverb time
Did some RT60 tests in a theatre once that had a changing gallery look and everytime they called with a problem of unintellegable sound some large hard backed painting on masonite had been hung down the walls

I like Marks idea have a nice pole or track along the wall and hang them with small cables, another alternative is do what was do in the past when walls were plaster, by driving a nail into a plaster wall would cause it to crack the plaster. Install a nice crown molding and hang the picture from them like in the past, you may also be able to add nice accent lighting behind the crown molding and have a nice glow on the ceiling of the theatre. One last thing if you use pictures that are frame with glass make sure the glass is none reflective.

Dan

You said drapes are out of the question but have you considered a track in front of the pictures? Pull the drapes across(or use motorised track) when in use as a cinema and open them when you want it to be in gallery mode.

Excellent advice, guys... thanks! I'll mention them all to the architect and see what she thinks might work best.
