Enough to say that it's not worth the effort for what you can purchase existing point of sale software for.

We use Rob's RTS system. For a medium-market situation, it's got the best bang for the buck of anything I've seen. I can't comment on larger markets, but his system seems flexible enough to handle about anything you'd want to throw at it.
