a story from Canadian Press:
Famous Players to sell beer at Calgary theatres

"TORONTO (CP) -- The Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission has granted licences to serve beer, wine and coolers in several Famous Players theatre locations in the province, the Toronto-based theatre chain announced Thursday.

"The licences will permit the sale of alcoholic beverages in the lobbies only, not the auditoriums themselves, and Famous Players has ensured that safeguards will be in place to ensure minors are not served. The chain already has licences to sell alcohol on a limited basis at four of its locales in B.C., Ontario and Quebec.

"It says the service will be available by the holiday season at each of four multiplexes in Calgary and one at the West Edmonton Mall.

"The sale of beer and wine is now common at movie theatres in Europe and parts of the U.S., but the organization Mothers Against Drunk Drivers argues it sets a dangerous precedent."

The B.C. Theatre in Langley that got a licence is out in a rural suburb. I wonder if they will institute a "designated driver" policy...

In Toronto the Globe and Mail headline to this story read:

"Suddenly Gigli got a lot more watchable".

The cinema I work at is licensed, and although a lot of people come to the bar for a drink before the movie, we don't have a problem with drunkenness. People come to watch a movie... not get drunk. We also have "Gold Class" cinemas, which are licensed and have recliners.
